Atlantic coast major storms, nor’easters and hurricanes create higher tide levels and majestic breaking waves that attack the dry beach and carry away beach sand. This lowers the average dry beach profile and makes it more vulnerable to future storms. Fortunately over the past 50 years oceanfront communities have discovered that the sand lost can be recovered and brought back from where is has washed below the ocean surface. Amelia Island is fortunate that our sand does not go far, mostly to the south end of the island. SAISSA was established in the early 1990’s with contributions from all property owners to restore our beach periodically.
