Our dune land is generally in good shape thanks to periodic beach replenishment organized by SAISSA that protects our property from storm water erosion. However, three issues are noted:
1) A few species of invasive plants are growing gin spots on our dunes, choking out natural beach vegetation. The invasive are fast growing, but not as hardy to salt spray and eventually die out leaving the area subject to wind erosion. It has been recommended that these invasive be removed and replaced with native beach grasses.
2) In and around the area of the 29 beach walkovers pedestrian traffic has killed beach grasses leaving the paths created vulnerable to wind erosion. Further, in some areas people are walking throughout the dune area despite “Keep Off The Dunes” signage. This results in damage to the fragile root systems. Post and rope has been suggested to restrict access outside the path easements.
3) The western edge of our dune land has small areas of natural salt-tolerant trees and understory called the Coastal Strand or Maritime Canopy..In many areas these trees are threatening by encroaching vines that will need to be cleared.
